The DL25 explained

Although no longer used in paper format unless there are computer issues, the DL25 is now used on an iPad by the examiners during a driving test.

The start of the test

  • The red section is used while in the waiting room
  • When the candidates examiner enters the waiting room they will call the name of the person they are examining.
  • They will ask to see the candidates provisional driving licence and ask them to read and sign the 2 declarations on the iPad and use the signature that is on their driving licence.
  • There will be a photo of the candidate on the iPad identical to that which is on the candidates licence and the examiner will ask for the candidate to look at them while they check the similarity.
  • The examiner will ask that the email address showing on their iPad is the email address the candidate wants the test results sent to. If it is not the same, the candidate can change the address at this time.
  • They may also ask if the address shown on the provisional licence is their current address.
  • Before leaving the waiting room the examiner will ask the candidate if they would like their accompanying driver to sit in the back for the test.
  • They will also ask the candidate whether they would like the candidate to have their accompanying driver to listen to the debrief at the end of the test. (the candidate will have this question repeated to them at the end of the test just in case they have changed their mind)
  • At this stage the examiner will ask the candidate to make their way outside, where they will carry out a test to see that the candidate can read a number plate from a distance of 20mtrs. If the candidate cannot read the number plate after 3 attempts, the test will be abandoned.

Outside the waiting room

  • The red section is used during the eyesight test, while making their way to the test vehicle and for entering detail about the vehicle before the test starts.
  • The eyesight test is carried out
  • While the examiner is making their way to the candidates car they are entering the vehicles details into the iPad.
  • Whether the accompanying driver is going out on the test with the candidate
  • The external condition of the vehicle to see that there is no damage to the vehicle and that the tyres are legal and not damaged.
  • The will enter on the iPad whether the vehicle is a driving school vehicle.
  • Whether the vehicle is fitted with dual control
  • Whether the test being taking is in a manual or automatic transmission
  • There are other details that may be entered on to the iPad such as the weather conditions.
  • The route number that the examiner will be using
  • Whether the independent drive section is via a sat nav or traffic signs

Move off and Manoeuvres

  • The red sections are used to record what manoeuvre has been asked to be demonstrated
  • And to record the 4 required pull-ins and move offs from the side of the road.
  • Regarding the manoeuvres, your candidate will be required to perform one of them and possibly an emergency stop. The 4 possibles are:
  • A reverse parallel park manoeuvre
  • A forward bay park and reverse out manoeuvre
  • A reverse bay park and drive out manoeuvre
  • Or pull up on the right-hand side of the road and reverse two car lengths in a straight line and then rejoin the left carriageway manoeuvre.
  • The pull-ins and move off again are deemed as
  • A normal stop moving off with no vehicles ahead of you
  • A move off at an angle, which will require you to move off around a parked vehicle that will be in front of you.
  • A hill start. This may be uphill or downhill.
  • A designated stop, where you will be asked to pull in at a designated point and then move off again.
  • Although there are only 4 required pull-ins, it may be the case that your candidate will be asked to pull-in up to seven times during their test. This is because on all of the following situations, their examiner will ask them to pull-in first.
  • To carry out a Parallel Park manoeuvre
  • To carry out an Emergency stop
  • To set up the sat nav for the independent section of the test.

Driver Faults Areas

  • The areas marked in red
  • These are the areas where driver faults will be recorded
  • A candidate can receive 15 driver faults before failing the driving test
  • As a general guide, a candidate may get 4 faults in any one category but the 5th fault may cause those faults to upgraded to a serious fault. This may be because in the examiners opinion the candidate is lacking ability in that particular area and requires additional practice before allowing them out on the roads with everyone else. As mentioned previously, this is only a guide, and an examiner may feel that this is required at 4 faults of the same category.

  • A driver fault is deemed as a candidate missing a requirement, but that missing it has not impacted another road user.

Serious and Dangerous faults

  • TEST FAIL!
  • Just one fault recorded in either of these categories will result in a test failure.
  • The difference mainly between a serious fault being recorded or a dangerous fault being recorded.
  • Serious would be recorded is an action or lack of was made by the candidate which affected another road user. For example, were your candidates actions the cause of another road user changing speed or direction?

  • For a dangerous fault to be recorded, it would be because the examiner may have had to intervene. Did the examiner have to verbally or physically take action to avoid a safety critical incident occurring?
  • This may be by using the dual controls, taking control of the steering wheel, or verbally telling the candidate to STOP or GO!

End of Test

  • The examiner will finalise the test and the results of the test by completing the sections marked in red.
  • This will cover whether the test is a Pass Fail or Not carried out
  • The number of faults will be recorded
  • Whether Eco driving was shown
  • Whether your licence was received
  • The licence Number
  • Your signature to say there has been no changes in your health since applying for a licence and that you have received your pass certificate.
